A gun battle with police in Brooklyn left a 25-year-old man in critical condition Sunday, according to authorities. The violence began when the man jumped into the rear passenger side of an unmarked NYPD car stopped at a red light on Avenue D near Nostrand Avenue in East Flatbush. Once inside, the man struggled with a sergeant who was in the front passenger seat. The sergeant's firearm went off in the struggle and the man managed to wrest the gun from her. The suspect fled, but was then confronted by another officer assigned to a foot post. The man ignored orders to drop the weapon and traded shots with the officer; he was shot as many as four times. He was taken to Kings County Hospital and had not yet been charged. None of the officers was injured.
