An Alaska man who choked a woman and then masturbated on her face while she was unconscious walked out of his sentencing hearing with no prison time last week, prompting calls to oust the sentencing judge. The Associated Press reports 34-year-old Justin Schneider pleaded guilty to one count of felony assault after he lured an Alaska Native woman into his car and then attacked her on a dead-end street last year. Superior Court Judge Michael Corey sentenced Schneider to two years in prison with one year suspended. Since Schneider had already spent a year under house arrest, he was able to walk out of court a free man. He also does not have to register as a sex offender because “unwanted contact with semen” is currently not a sex offense in the state. Judge Corey reportedly said he felt the sentence was too light but “deferred to prosecutors on what could be proven at trial” and pointed to Schneider’s plea deal. “The punishment in this case in no way matched the severity of the crime,” Alaska Gov. Bill Walker said in a statement. “We must fix this problem immediately, and we will.”
