Manet's Self-Portrait to Be Auctioned

Going Once

Have a spare wall? A Manet self-portrait, of which there are only two in existence, is being put up for auction by hedge fund tycoon Steven Cohen. This year has already been big for art auctions—the record for a work of art has been broken twice, a Giacometti Walking Man sculpture went for $104.3m and recently, Picasso’s Nude, Green Leaves and Bust sold for $106.4. Charles Moffett curated a Manet exhibition in Paris and New York and called the work currently up for grabs “not only the greatest Manet portrait in private hands, but also one of the very greatest self-portraits in the entire canon of art history.” The painting’s value has been conservatively estimated at between $30 million and $45 million.
