Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared exasperated and sighed on Tuesday when a reporter asked President Trump about his plans to “take over” Gaza. The president met with the King of Jordan at the White House to discuss his ultimatum of withholding aid from Jordan and Egypt if they don’t comply with his proposal to re-house Palestinians as part of his plan for U.S. ownership of Gaza. Earlier this month, Trump announced his plans to purchase the Gaza Strip and convert the land into a “beautiful real estate development.” This is an assertion that Trump doubled down on during an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier that aired on Monday. The anchor then asked the president on Tuesday—who was accompanied by Rubio and the King of Jordan, Abdullah II—to confirm his intentions for the besieged enclave during his press conference at the White House. “Today, you just said we’re not going to buy Gaza,” the reporter asked. Trump’s response seemed to draw a resigned reaction from Rubio. “We wouldn’t have to buy [Gaza],” Trump told the reporter. “We would own it…nobody would question it.”
