A Marine Corps general at Parris Island recommended charges and special courts-martial on Tuesday for three Marines and a preliminary hearing for a fourth following a hazing probe at the South Carolina base. Last September, Corps officials said they were considering potential punishments for as many as 20 Marines at the training site. The move came after three probes into alleged abuse of recruits by drill instructors. The investigations began after the March 18 death of 20-year-old recruit Raheel Siddiqui, who is purported to have fallen 40 feet from a barracks stairwell hours after he was slapped by a drill instructor, in what was deemed a suicide by Marines officials.
