Massaging Shoes Cause Bomb Scare

False Alarm

Man detained at airport for circuits in sneakers.

The inner workings of a man's foot-massaging shoes caused him to be detained in a Pakistani airport Sunday night when authorities saw the batteries and circuits in the sneakers and suspected they could be used to make a bomb. Faiz Mohammad was arrested when airport security saw the shoes’ wiring as they went through a scanner. Mohammad, a building constructor from Oman, said he bought the shoes in Karachi and had no idea that each sneaker used two AAA batteries connected to a small circuit. Pakistani security has been under scrutiny since the failed Times Square bomber was revealed to have been trained by the Pakistani Taliban and four members of the Pakistani group Jaish-e-Mohammed were arrested in connection with the incident.
