Washington Nationals starter Max Scherzer left his former Detroit Tigers teammates stunned Wednesday night, striking out 20 batters in a performance described as “supernatural” and “like a horror film.” Just a day after rebounding from a seven-game losing streak, Scherzer’s merciless pitches dashed any hopes the Tigers may have had for turning things around, giving the Nationals a 3-2 victory in what is being called the game of the year. Scherzer, facing off against his former teammates for the first time since joining the Nationals more than a year ago, became the fourth pitcher in league history with 20 strikeouts in a nine-inning game.
