May Day Protests Across the World Turn Violent

The ancient spring festival has erupted into firery clashes between police and civilians across eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Police used tear gas on the hundreds of civilians who gathered to celebrate May Day in Ankara on May 1, 2014. Police fired volleys of tear gas and jets of water on hundreds of protesters trying to march to Ankara’s Kizilay Square. Earlier, police in Istanbul used water cannon and tear gas against thousands of protesters who tried to defy a May Day ban on demonstrations. At least 50 people were injured. Hundreds of riot police moved on the crowd in an effort to breach the barricades leading to Istanbul’s Taksim Square, which has been the center of many of the anti-government protests in recent months.
