A California mayor resigned Monday following last week’s car crash that seriously injured four cheerleaders. Alan Long stepped down from his post as mayor of Murietta after being arrested on suspicion of injuring four high-school students while driving under the influence. Long failed multiple sobriety field tests after his car hit the rear of the vehicle filled with the teens and displayed “signs and symptoms consistent with alcohol impairment,” according to police. Long’s attorney, Virginia Blumenthal, insists his blood alcohol level was within the legal limit and that he stopped to provide medical aid to the injured teens. The resignation is “not an admission of guilt,” she stressed. “There are a lot of accidents that are not crimes.”
