“Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.” The feud between Beatles bandmates John Lennon and Paul McCartney has been well-documented, but on what would have been the iconic singer’s 70th birthday, it’s been revealed by Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono that it was actually McCartney who saved their marriage. After what’s famously known as “the lost weekend”— when Lennon, during the summer of 1973, had separated from Yoko and began a relationship with his personal assistant, May Pang—McCartney stepped in, asking Yoko what Lennon could do to win her back. Yoko made some suggestions, and then McCartney visited Lennon in Los Angeles, where he was living with Pang, and advised him on what to do to repair his marriage. Lennon immediately flew back to New York to court Yoko, and the rest is history. “I want the world to know that it was a very touching thing that he did for John,” said Yoko. “He was genuinely concerned about his old partner. Even though John was not even asking for help—John, Paul, all of them were too proud to ask anything—he helped. John often said he didn't understand why Paul did this for us, but he did.”
