Despite General Stanley McChrystal’s swift dismissal by President Obama last week after an embarrassing interview with Rolling Stone, the 34-year Army veteran will be allowed to maintain his four-star status, the White House announced Tuesday. The decision bypasses official rules, as typically one must have three years as a four-star general to maintain the rank in retirement. As a four-star retiree, McChrystal gets a $8,868 pay bump—raising him up to $149,700 a year in retirement pay before taxes—and generous access to military facilities and medical care.
