Vowing to “face these false allegations with strength and firm resolve,” former Republican governor of Virginia Bob McDonnell said he did “nothing illegal” after he and his wife, Maureen, were indicted on 14 counts. The governor and his wife allegedly accepted more than $135,000 in gifts—ranging from expensive clothing to trips—from the former CEO of Star Scientific in return for help from the governor. McDonnell told reporters he will “use every available resource and advocate… for as long as it takes to fight and prevail against these false allegations and the unjust overreach of the federal government.” McDonnell had once been viewed as a rising star in the party, and a potential favorite for the 2016 presidential nomination.
