Coal has a new king. Alpha Natural Resources has bought Massey Energy, creating the third-largest coal producer in the world, and prepares to ramp up production as global demand for coal continues to grow. Despite concerns that the purchase could run into anti-trust issues, Alpha CEO Kevin Crutchfield is optimistic, saying, “We’re very confident that we’ll clear the (Federal Trade Commission).” Federal and state investigations into Massey regarding the accident at the Upper Big Branch mine that killed 29 miners last April are continuing, but on that front too, Crutchfield is hopeful, saying he expects Alpha to have the same relationship with regulators it currently has.
