Melania Trump spent $95,000 of taxpayer money during the one day she spent in Cairo, Egypt, according to a Friday report from Quartz. Federal spending records show that the Semiramis Intercontinental Cairo—where the presidential suite is only $699—was paid the lavish sum for what the expenditure report calls “FLOTUS visit hotel rooms.” A spokeswoman for the White House told Quartz that Melania did not actually spend the night in the hotel, and only visited Cairo for about six hours. She did not explain the reason for the nearly $100,000 payment. Quartz notes that the total is quite a bit higher than the $77,345.35 that the government spent on Trump’s two-day stay last July at his golf course in Scotland, despite the fact that the nearly $80,000 payment also covered his son Eric, Chief of Staff John Kelly, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, and social media director Dan Scavino, among others.
