China insisted Wednesday it was unaware of alleged threats that were made to the wife of the now-former Interpol chief who was detained during a trip to the country. Meng Hongwei vanished after traveling to China last month from France, where the global police agency is based. Beijing officials later revealed he was being detained on corruption allegations. His wife, Grace Meng, said she received a phone call from a man speaking Chinese who told her that a pair of “work teams” had been dispatched “just for you.” China’s foreign ministry insisted it was “not aware of the situation,” but added it would be “natural” for Chinese officials to contact Meng’s wife. Grace Meng has been placed under French police protection in the city of Lyon.
