Mexico City Mulls Temporary Marriage

Could get 2-year vows and renew.

You'd better remember your anniversary if you get one of these. Leftists in Mexico City's assembly have proposed reforming the civil code so that couples could decide on the length of their marriage. The minimum contract—which includes provisions on handling children and property in the event of a split--would be for two years and could be renewed if the marriage goes well. Around half of Mexico City marriages end in divorce, usually in the first two years. "You wouldn't have to go through the tortuous process of divorce," says Leonel Luna, the assemblyman who co-authored the bill. The church, already angry with Mexico City's decision to legalize gay marriage, called the proposal “absurd.”
