It’s a bad day to be M.I.A.’s publicist: The pop star tricked her fans into dialing the number of Lynn Hirschberg, a reporter who recently wrote an unflattering profile of her in The New York Times Magazine, by tweeting Hirschberg’s phone number and claiming it was her own. “CALL ME IF YOU WANNA TALK TO ME ABOUT THE N Y T TRUTH ISSUE, ill b taking calls all day bitches ;),” she wrote. Reached for comment, Hirschberg said M.I.A.’s action was “infuriating and not surprising.” Hirschberg also said that it was “fairly unethical,” but that, "She's a provocateur, and provocateurs want to be provocative." Hirschberg’s profile interspersed quotes of M.I.A. discussing her sympathy for the Tamil people of Sri Lanka with scenes of her eating truffled french fries at a fancy restaurant in Los Angeles.
