Miami Marlins Prematurely Announced Muhammad Ali’s Death

BEST INTENTIONS

More than two hours before family went public.

The Miami Marlins told fans attending their Friday evening that Muhammad Ali had passed away more than two hours before news of the boxing legend's death was announced. Although there was no public confirmation of the heavyweight champ's death, the team showed a photograph of Ali on the scoreboard (with the caption "1942-2016") moments after the game versus the New York Mets was complete. “We were informed he passed away,” team president David Samson said, explaining that he had heard as much from a source he declined to name. “We wanted to honor him. I was informed and did what felt natural. I was not aware it had not been made public yet.”
