Michael Cohen’s lawyer hailed his client’s guilty plea Tuesday as a “new beginning” that could mark the beginning of the end for President Trump. Hours after Cohen pleaded guilty to tax-evasion and campaign-finance violations, and also testified that Trump had “directed” him to make hush-money payments to two women, his attorney Lanny Davis took to social media and TV to slam the president. “If those payments were a crime for Michael Cohen, then why wouldn't they be a crime for Donald Trump?” he wrote on Twitter. He went on to say Cohen’s plea deal—which does not require him to testify against anyone—marks “his chance to tell ‘the rest of the story.’” Davis echoed those statements in an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo, saying he believes Cohen would be willing to provide information on Trump that would be “of interest” to special counsel Robert Mueller in the ongoing Russia investigation. “He is as much guilty of a felony, he just hasn’t owned up to it,” Davis told CNN about Trump. “But what he did do is try to hide by asking his lawyer to do something he wasn’t willing to do because he feared the electoral consequences.” Davis—who once advised Bill Clinton during his own presidential scandals—also said he’d had conversations with Cohen “about his views about the suitability of Mr. Trump to be president of the United States,” and based on those conversations, Cohen is now telling the truth because he is “motivated for his country.”
