Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance on Broadway Friday night: The first lady and a group of six girlfriends showed up to see the musical Fela!, about Fela Kuti, the Afrobeat musician and Nigerian political activist. "When the audience realized that she was in the audience, they just went nuts," said Stephen Hendel, the show's producer. "People started standing up and applauding, saying 'We love you!' and 'We love you, Michelle!' It took a minute or so to get the audience to settle down." Obama arrived just as the overture was finishing. The cast was informed about 20 minutes before the performance that the first lady would be in the audience.
