Is This the End of Prada Marfa?: The famous and controversial Prada Marfa "shop" near Valentine, Texas, may be closed down. The "shop" is not a real Prada store, but an art installation by Scandinavian artists Michael Elmgreen and Ignar Dragset, set up in 2005. However, the Texas Department of Transportation is now asserting that the store constitutes an illegal form of roadside advertisement. Boyd Elder, the site representative for Prada Marfa told the New York Times that if the store violated state regulations, they should have been notified in 2005 when it was installed. "It's not an advertisement; it's an art statement," Elder said. "And it's on private property." Prada Marfa intially faced legal troubles when it first opened for utilizing the Prada logo without permission. Miuccia Prada quickly sanctioned the use of the logo and declared there was no commercial relationship between the artists and her brand. [Vogue]
