Mississippi voters rejected Tuesday a controversial “personhood” amendment to the state constitution that would have defined life as starting at conception. The measure would have outlawed all abortions, even in cases of rape and incest, and also banned types of contraception that work after an egg is fertilized, like IUDs. Nearly 60 percent of voters rejected the bill. Conservatives, however, scored a victory elsewhere in the state, with Republican Phil Bryant cruising to victory to replace outgoing Governor Haley Barbour.
