A handful of editors at the Wall Street Journal are likely kicking themselves now that Bernie Madoff is going down as the biggest ponzi schemer in history. It turns out the paper had the chance to chase the story back in 2005, when whistler blower Harry Markopolos first tipped them off to the scandal. "Unfortunately neither the Wall Street Journal nor SEC were inclined to even pick up a phone and dial any of the leads I provided to them," Markopolos testified at a House panel today. "I believe that senior editors of the Journal respected and feared Mr. Madoff," he explained.
