Misty Copeland has been promoted to principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater, making her the first black female dancer in the group’s 75-year history. She has been with the company for 14 years, and has served as a soloist for nearly eight years. Copeland has also gained unusual mainstream popularity for a ballet dancer, starring in an Under Armour ad and sparking a public conversation over whether she ought to be promoted to principal.
