BuzzFeed has discovered that Republican frontrunner for the 2012 presidential nomination was once formally enrolled in the Democratic Party. Mitt Romney registered to vote in 1976 but did not enroll with a specific party. Then in 1992 he cast a Democratic primary vote for Paul Tsongas, which—in accordance with Massachusetts law—automatically enrolled him in the Democratic Party. There was even speculation at one point that he would pursue a Democratic run for office—such as during the 1994 Senate primary. However, when Ted Kennedy campaigned for reelection that year, Romney decided to go up against him as a Republican.
