Mitt Romney won the Republican primary in Utah’s U.S. Senate race on Tuesday, paving the way for a revival of his political career with the seat left vacant by retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch. The former Massachusetts governor, who was the favorite to win the race, beat State Rep. Mike Kennedy to secure the nomination. He won the race after receiving an endorsement from President Trump, who has repeatedly mocked him in response to criticism of his policies. Romney, who moved to Utah after his failed 2012 presidential bid, vowed to continue to speak up against the president despite the endorsement. In an op-ed for The Salt Lake Tribune published Monday, he wrote, “I have and will continue to speak out when the president says or does something which is divisive, racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, dishonest or destructive to democratic institutions.” He will now face off against Democratic Salt Lake County Councilwoman Jenny Wilson for the seat in November.
