Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins and Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros were crowned the as the MVPs of the National League and American League, respectively, on Thursday. Stanton narrowly edged out Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto for the title, while Altuve received 27 out of 30 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Altuve, whose Astros won the 2017 World Series, finished the season with an MLB-best .346 batting average. Stanton hit .281 with 168 hits and 59 home runs.
