More Bodies Wash Ashore in Japan

Rescuers say they need more help.

Japanese rescue workers are overwhelmed, reporting that they don’t have nearly enough food or supplies to deal with the wreckage left behind by the earthquake and tsunami. Body bags and coffins are running out, crematoriums are jammed, and more bodies continue to wash ashore. Meanwhile, refugees from the crisis, almost half a million strong, are on their fourth day with no shelter and little food or water. In Iwate Prefecture, one of the worst-off, an official said he has just 10 percent of the supplies he needs to aid relief efforts. The death toll is feared to be around 10,000.
