Dr. Robert L. Spitzer, widely considered the "most influential" psychiatrist of his time, died this weekend at 83 years old. Spitzer played a pivotal role in setting rigorous standards for diagnosing disorders, and was influential in having homosexuality removed from the professional manual as a mental disorder. He died of complications from heart disease.
