The recently announced divorce of Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, Sonic Youth’s “king and queen of the indie-rock scene,” has left many an aging hipster in dismay. Salon’s Elissa Schappell channels this consternation in her eulogy of the couple’s long-admired romance. In fact, Schappell, who for a time lived with her husband on the same block as the rock star duo, often looked to them as a shining example of domestic bliss: “They made monogamy, the whole til-death-do-us-part seem rad.” And when Schappell and her husband were thinking about becoming parents, they once again turned to “Kim and Thurston” for guidance. Now that they’ve split, she admits to projecting her own fears on their relationship. “As they succeeded, we succeeded,” she writes. “Now the world just got a little less cool.”
