Mufasa continues to dominate Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in the first box office weekend of the new year. The Disney prequel sat at No. 1 in domestic box office sales for the second weekend in a row, raking in $24 million and showing in 3,925 North American theaters. Overall, the film has grossed $168 million domestically, with worldwide sales at $476 million globally. Sonic 3 was just behind but failed to speed past Mufasa, grossing $21.2 million from 3,746 theaters. So far, the third movie adaptation of the video game raised $187.5 million domestically and $336 million worldwide, with a $122 million production. And yes, a follow-up is already in the works. Other movies are sailing far behind the two family-friendly films, but worth mentioning: Nosferatu, the highly-anticipated Dracula remake, received $13.2 million in its second weekend at the box office, showing at 3,132 venues, according to Variety. Meanwhile, Moana 2 received $12.3 million in its sixth weekend, with Wicked grossing $10.2 million in its seventh.
