The political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood has won 47 seats in the country’s lower parliament, the country’s election commissioner announced Saturday. The hardline Islamist Salafi al-Nour party came in second, winning 24 percent of all seats on offer, the election commissioner said. Elections for the lower house were held in three stages, and the upper house elections will begin in February. Meanwhile, the ruling Egyptian military pardoned 1,959 people convicted by military courts in the year since President Hosni Mubarak stepped down. Among the pardoned is Michael Nabil, 25, an activist who went on a hunger strike to protest his conviction for posting remarks saying the army tried to quell the uprising against Mubarak.
