Someone should have told the New York Police Department that asking New Yorkers to tweet photos with cops wasn’t going to elicit too many smiling photos with officers in Times Square. On Tuesday, the NYPD asked: “Do you have a photo with a member of the NYPD? Tweet us & tag it #myNYPD.” The hashtag was quickly taken over by people posting some of the most upsetting photos of unprofessional NYPD behavior, from cops apparently asleep in uniform to officers holding down a photographer against the pavement. At one point, the hashtag was trending in the top 10 on Twitter, not only for New York, but in the world. Deputy Chief Kim Y. Royster merely said in a brief statement Tuesday night that the NYPD is working “creating new ways to communicate effectively with the community.”
