Mystery of YSL's $28 Million Chair

The record-breaking Yves Saint Laurent auction last month didn’t just herald a reemergence of art during the recession, but also dragged a bit of deep-pocketed controversy front and center. The big winner (or loser, depending on whose wallet you’re checking) was the Eileen Gray “Dragons” chair, which sold to an art dealer on behalf of a mystery bidder for $28 million. The Economist claimed dealer Cheska Vallois raised her paddle for Wall Street mogul Henry Kravis. Kravis later claimed to Gawker the chair was not purchased on his (or his wife’s) behalf. Will the real winning bidder please sit down?
