House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) named eight Democrats to the new special climate change committee on Thursday—omitting progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). AOC unveiled her new Green New Deal outline Thursday, a massive policy package that aims to tackle the effects of climate change and remake the U.S. economy. It is unclear whether Ocasio-Cortez sought a seat on the climate change panel. The panel is charged with examining climate change and making recommendations to other committees on how to mitigate it, but does not have the power to advance legislation or issue subpoenas. Three of the Democratic members named by Pelosi are freshmen. “This new Select Committee will spearhead Democrats’ work to develop innovative, effective solutions to prevent and reverse the climate crisis,” Pelosi said in a statement. “It will generate the energy and action required to permanently reduce pollution so that we can honor our responsibility to be good stewards of the planet for future generations.”
