Teary Naomi Osaka Says She May Not Play Again After U.S. Open Flub
OSAKA OUT
Naomi Osaka suffered a stunning three-set loss at the U.S. Open on Friday night to 18-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez, falling 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 in Arthur Ashe Stadium. The tournament’s defending champion has had a disappointing summer, withdrawing from the French Open and losing in the third round in the Tokyo Olympics. She threw her racket out of frustration several times, walked off the court after losing the second set, then broke down in a post-match interview. “I feel like I’m at this point where I’m trying to figure out what I want to do, and I honestly don’t know when I’m going to play my next tennis match,” she said. Fernandez said in her post-match interview, “From the very beginning, right before the match, I knew I was able to win.”
