Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer on Saturday was thisclose to a perfect game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, missing the gold ring of baseball by one batter at the bottom of the ninth, Sports Illustrated reported. Scherzer threw a no-hitter against the Pirates until he beaned batter Jose Tabata on the left elbow, forcing a walk and ending Scherzer's perfect game quest. He still managed to finish with a 6-0 win over the Pirates.
