Nearly 300 Passengers Fall Ill on Cruise Ship After Norovirus Outbreak

The ship is returning to Florida one day early.

A cruise ship that sailed to Jamaica will be returning a day early after nearly 300 people were hit with an outbreak of norovirus, local news outlet WESH reports. Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas is reportedly returning to Florida’s Port Canaveral and giving passengers full refunds after 277 passengers and crew members got a stomach bug while the ship was en route to Jamaica. Passengers reportedly tweeted that they were forced to stay on-board when the ship landed in Falmouth, Jamaica, on Wednesday. Cruise line spokesman Owen Torres told the Associated Press the crew thought the “right thing to do” was to “get everyone home early rather than have guests worry about their health.” The ship will reportedly return to Florida on Saturday, giving more time for crew members to “completely clean and sanitize” the ship before its next voyage.
