New Book in Town: Your BlackBerry

FUTURE OF BOOKS

Application will bring lit to smartphones.

The Kindle may already be yesterday’s news. Soon there will be a newer, smaller, smarter device on which to read books—and you may already own it. A Canadian company is creating Shortcovers, a book application for iPhones, BlackBerries, and other handheld smartphones. The news comes on the heels of the new Google Book Search for mobile, which opened 1.5 million public domain books to the Android phone and the iPhone. But Shortcovers, which will be available on iTunes, is expected to offer books, blog posts, and magazine and newspaper articles. And not all of its content comes for free—executives say they’ll charge 99 cents for every book chapter.
