Intel and Micron announced a new memory chip on Tuesday that promises to be 1,000 times fast than standard Flash memory. The companies claim “it’s the first brand-new category of storage chip since 1989.” The “3D XPoint” chip has reportedly been in the works for more than a decade, and utilizes a new three-dimensional structure and new materials. Samples will be available later this year, and the chip will go into mass production in 2016.
