Clint Corvinus, a police officer with the Alamogordo Police Department, was gunned down Friday while chasing a suspect. Thirty-three-year-old Corvinus, a four-year veteran of the police department, was reportedly on a routine foot patrol with a fellow officer when the pair encountered Joseph Moreno, a man with a criminal history and several warrants out for his arrest. When Corvinus and his partner tried to stop Moreno, a foot chase ensued, and "at some point during the foot pursuit, shots were fired. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene," a statement from the police department said Friday. Moreno reportedly opened fire on Corvinus before being shot himself by another officer. Corvinus was rushed to a hospital but did not survive his injuries, police said. His death is the second fatal shooting of a police officer in New Mexico in less than a month. Governor Susana Martinez released a statement after the incident saying "we must do everything we can to stand up for those who put their lives on the line every single day to protect us."
