New Mexico’s governor ordered the partial withdrawal of National Guard troops from the U.S. border with Mexico late Tuesday in a challenge to President Donald Trump’s assertion that there’s a security crisis in the region, the Associated Press reports. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced the decision just before Trump’s State of the Union address. “New Mexico will not take part in the president’s charade of border fear-mongering by misusing our diligent National Guard troops,” Grisham said in a statement. “I recognize and appreciate the legitimate concerns of residents and officials in southwestern New Mexico, particularly Hidalgo County, who have asked for our assistance, as migrants and asylum-seekers continue to appear at their doorstep.” The governor said about one dozen guardsmen will stay in the southwestern corner of the state to help with humanitarian needs. State police will also assist local law enforcement with these efforts, she said.
