New Orleans will pay a $13.3 million settlement to the victims and families of victims in 17 police brutality cases, the city announced on Monday. The city was slapped with a class action from 17 plaintiffs who alleged wrongful death or injury at the hands of city police. New Orleans police have also been charged in a series of civil rights abuses, killings, and cover-ups that occurred after Hurricane Katrina. At the Monday announcement, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu pledged change within the city's police department. "We are going to change as a people and we are going to change as a city because we choose to," he said.
