New Zealand rescue workers and volunteers expanded their search Wednesday to areas beyond the buildings flattened in Christchurch’s downtown to find the 300 people still missing. The city’s largest tower, the 26-story Grand Chancellor Hotel, has been cordoned off after one side of the building fell away and left the building’s vertical windows at a 45-degree tilt—and at one point Wednesday, police estimated the building had moved 10 feet in the space of 10 minutes. Aftershocks rocked the city Wednesday, rattling nerves as rescue workers continue to look for survivors. Police enforced a 6:30 p.m. curfew Wednesday night to stop looting, and police said they had made six arrests for alleged theft and burglary since Tuesday’s earthquake.
