New Zealand Welcomes New Year

The new year is already under way in some parts of the world: New Zealand became the first country to usher in 2011, celebrating while most Americans were still sleeping. The country, the first major nation to ring in January 1, shot fireworks from the highest tower in its capital Auckland to mark the occasion. Australia follows soon after, welcoming in the New Year at 8 a.m. EST with a display that Sydney is billing as the largest fireworks celebration in the world.
