Newt Gingrich and Fox News Channel have parted ways amid heightened speculation that the former Speaker of the House could be tapped as presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s running mate. The two parties mutually agreed to suspend Gingrich’s contributor contract “effective immediately,” according to Fox. “Due to the intense media speculation about Gingrich’s potential selection as Donald Trump’s vice presidential candidate, we felt it best to halt his contributor role on the network to avoid all conflicts of interest that may arise,” Jay Wallace, executive vice president for news, said in a statement. Gingrich, who has been on Fox’s payroll since October, has campaign with Trump multiple times and is thought to be near the top of his shortlist.
