Zachary Cruz, the younger brother of confessed Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz, was arrested Monday for trespassing at at the school where his brother killed 17 people last month. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said Zachary Cruz, 18, “surpassed all locked doors and gates” at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to get onto the campus, despite previously being told to stay away from the site. He told sheriff’s deputies he simply wanted to “reflect on the school shooting and soak it in.” Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie was quoted by the Sun-Sentinel as saying the visit “wasn’t some breach of security” as Cruz “came through whatever gate was open at the time.” But he conceded Cruz’s presence at the school was “kind of odd” and did “creep people out.” Cruz had previously told investigators he felt “somewhat responsible” for his brother’s actions and regretted bullying his brother when the two were younger. Nikolas Cruz faces the death penalty for the Feb. 14 shooting.
