The New Jersey State Senate's 20-14 vote against legalizing gay marriage Thursday made many gay-rights advocates lose hope. Republican Gov. Chris Christie takes office Jan. 19, and has vowed to veto a gay-marriage bill, setting back the heavy efforts in recent months by advocates to move the bill forward. The vote ran into speed bumps when it was canceled last month, and now that Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine—who promised to sign the bill into law—is leaving, the odds of state legislature approving gay marriage are slim to none.
