No Decision on Jodi Arias’s Death Penalty

Mistrial declared in sentencing phase.

Jodi Arias will have to wait a little bit longer to learn her fate. The jury on Thursday said they were deadlocked on whether to issue her the death penalty, forcing a judge to declare a mistrial on the sentencing phase. The jury had deliberated for nearly 14 hours over the course of three days, but they said the could not reach an agreement on whether Arias should be sentenced to life in prison or death. As a result, Judge Sherry Stevens declared that a new trial would convene July 18. Arias gave an interview shortly after she was found guilty, saying she would rather have the death penalty, but made an about-face when she actually had her sentencing hearing.
