The jury in Casey Anthony’s capital murder case left the first day of deliberations without a verdict Monday, and will return at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Anthony has been charged with murdering her 2-year-old daughter Caylee, and could face the death penalty if convicted. Closing arguments in the case were held Monday morning, as prosecutors painted Anthony as a “pathological liar” who murdered her daughter and then claimed the toddler was kidnapped to get attention. In his closing argument, Anthony’s lawyer Jose Baez claimed cast suspicion on Anthony’s father, George, who attempted suicide a few weeks before Caylee’s remains were found in 2009. Judge Belvin Perry told the jury they could convict Anthony of a lesser crime such as second-degree murder, manslaughter or third-degree felony murder—charges that do not carry the death sentence.
